Keep your Harvest Right vacuum pump oil cleaner and your freeze drying system operating efficiently with the Harvest Right Oil Filter. Designed specifically for vacuum pump oil, this filtration system removes debris and contaminants from used oil while also allowing accumulated water to separate for removal before the oil is returned to the pump.
Regular oil filtration is an important part of maintaining an oil based vacuum pump. During normal freeze drying cycles, small amounts of moisture can accumulate in the pump oil. As the oil passes through the filtration system, water settles toward the bottom of the collection bottle while the filtered oil remains above it. The separated water can then be discarded before the clean oil is returned to the vacuum pump.

Filtering and reusing oil when it remains in good condition can help extend vacuum pump life, maintain vacuum performance, and reduce unnecessary oil replacement.
Designed Specifically for Vacuum Pump Oil
The Harvest Right Oil Filter is intended exclusively for filtering vacuum pump oil. It should not be used with food, cooking oils, other lubricants, or unrelated liquids.
The filter itself is not dishwasher safe and should be maintained according to Harvest Right's recommended cleaning and replacement procedures.
Simple Oil Filtration Process
Filtering your vacuum pump oil is straightforward. Drain the used oil from the pump directly into the filtration system and allow it to pass through the filter.
After filtration, inspect the collected oil and allow any separated water to settle at the bottom. Carefully pour off the clean oil while leaving the water behind, then discard the separated water. Never return accumulated water to the vacuum pump, as doing so can damage the pump.
The filtered oil can then be poured back into the vacuum pump for continued use, provided it remains suitable for freeze drying.
How to Tell When Oil Is Ready to Reuse
Properly filtered vacuum pump oil should be free from visible debris and particulates, have good visual clarity, not appear milky or chalky, and allow the vacuum pump to achieve suitable freeze drying pressure.
Oil may appear yellow or amber and still be suitable for use. Clarity and contamination are more important indicators than color alone.
Replaceable Filter Cartridge
The filtration cartridge is a consumable component and will eventually need replacement as contaminants accumulate.
Harvest Right recommends replacing the cartridge after approximately 15 to 20 uses, although replacement may be required sooner depending on the condition and contamination level of the oil being filtered.
Signs that the cartridge should be replaced include oil draining unusually slowly or failing to pass through the filter, as well as oil remaining milky, cloudy, or contaminated after filtration.
First Time Setup
Remove the cartridge from its packaging and insert it into the cartridge holder, pressing firmly until a proper seal is formed.
The adjustable dial on the lid can optionally be used as a simple reminder of when the oil was last filtered.
Why Oil Filtration Matters
Clean vacuum pump oil plays an important role in maintaining the vacuum pressures required during freeze drying. Oil contaminated with water, particulates, or other material can negatively affect pump performance.
Routine filtration provides a simple way to maintain oil quality between changes while helping protect the vacuum pump over the long term.
Recommended Use Practices
- Use this filter exclusively for vacuum pump oil.
- Drain oil directly from the pump into the filtration system.
- Allow separated water to fully settle before pouring off the clean oil.
- Discard separated water rather than returning it to the pump.
- Inspect oil clarity before returning it to the pump for reuse.
- Replace the cartridge after approximately 15 to 20 uses or sooner if drainage slows or filtration quality declines.
- Use the adjustable lid dial to track when the oil was last filtered.
- Hand clean the filter housing; it is not dishwasher safe.
