The Harvest Right Pharmaceutical Medium Freeze Dryer delivers substantially more processing capacity than the Small while maintaining a footprint and electrical requirements suitable for facilities that are not ready for larger scale equipment.
With seven stainless steel trays providing 6.5 square feet of total tray space, the Medium processes approximately 7 to 9 lbs of wet material per batch, producing roughly 1.75 to 2.25 lbs of dry material depending on the product and its original moisture content.
This makes the Medium a strong middle ground in Harvest Right's Pharmaceutical lineup. It offers nearly twice the wet batch capacity of the Small without requiring operators to move all the way to the 12 to 14 lb capacity of the Large.
Once material is prepared and loaded, operation is largely automatic. Harvest Right states that the Pharma Freeze Dryer automatically freezes and dries the material, then alerts the operator when the batch is complete.
For growing botanical processors, laboratories, specialty production facilities, and operators whose smaller freeze dryer has become a production bottleneck, the Medium provides a meaningful increase in throughput while retaining straightforward operation.
7 to 9 lbs Per Batch
The Medium Pharmaceutical Freeze Dryer is designed to process approximately 7 to 9 lbs of wet material per cycle.
This additional capacity can make a major difference for operations processing material regularly. Compared with the Small's 3.75 to 5 lb capacity, fewer batches may be required to process the same harvest or production volume.
The Medium is particularly well suited to:
- Growing production operations
- Regular botanical processing
- Laboratory workflows
- Product development
- Multiple smaller production runs
- Facilities moving beyond entry level capacity
- Operators who need more throughput without choosing the largest machine
Harvest Right recommends completely filling the trays while avoiding material above the tops of the trays. Overloading can significantly increase batch duration.
Seven Stainless Steel Trays
The Medium Pharmaceutical model includes seven stainless steel trays providing approximately 6.5 square feet of total drying area.
The additional tray area is one of the Medium's biggest advantages over the Small. Instead of simply loading substantially more material into the same tray area, operators have additional surface area available to distribute the batch.
This helps make the Medium particularly useful for production environments where increasing throughput is important but operators still want manageable individual batches.
Fully Automatic Freeze Drying
The Pharma Freeze Dryer is designed to automate the core freeze drying process.
Harvest Right describes the system as automatically freezing and drying the loaded material. Once the batch is complete, the freeze dryer provides an audible notification.
During a cycle, the system automatically monitors cooling, vacuum, and heating.
If a problem is detected, the machine provides diagnostic information to help the operator identify the issue. The system can also attempt to resolve certain conditions itself before requiring intervention.
This allows the operator to focus on material preparation and production rather than continuously managing refrigeration, vacuum pressure, and shelf heating manually.
Automatic Mode
For routine processing, Harvest Right provides its automatic START mode.
Once START is selected, the freeze dryer begins preparing the chamber and prompts the operator when it is ready for material.
After the trays are inserted, the drain valve is closed, the door is properly sealed, and CONTINUE is selected, the machine begins freezing the material.
From there, Harvest Right states that the remainder of the freeze drying process is automated.
Custom Processing Controls
The Pharmaceutical software also provides a CUSTOM mode for applications requiring more control than the standard automatic cycle.
The owner's manual identifies three available processing approaches on the main operating screen, including CUSTOM and Harvest Right's automatic START mode.
Custom operation can be particularly useful when developing repeatable processes for specialized materials or when experienced operators want greater control over the freeze drying workflow.
Freeze First, Then Dry Under Vacuum
Freeze drying relies on a carefully controlled combination of low temperature and vacuum rather than conventional warm air dehydration.
The material is frozen before the drying stages begin, allowing frozen moisture to be removed during the subsequent vacuum process.
Harvest Right specifically instructs Pharma owners not to bypass the freezing cycle. According to the manufacturer, allowing the freeze dryer to perform the complete cycle improves the finished product and extends vacuum pump life. Bypassing the freezing cycle also voids the vacuum pump warranty.
Pre Frozen Material Can Reduce Freeze Time
Material can be frozen before it is placed inside the Medium Pharmaceutical Freeze Dryer.
Harvest Right recommends that pre frozen material be frozen for approximately 48 hours before loading.
After loading, the machine still progresses through its programmed process, but starting with frozen material can reduce the amount of time required during the initial freezing stage.
The owner's manual specifically notes that pre frozen material shortens freeze time.
Adjustable Extra Dry Time
Toward the end of the drying process, the system transitions into an additional drying period.
Harvest Right presets two hours of Extra Dry Time, but operators can increase or decrease this period as required.
This provides additional flexibility for materials with different moisture characteristics or batches where the operator wants additional drying before unloading.
Batch Times Depend on Operating Conditions
A roughly 24 hour cycle can be a useful reference under favorable conditions, but actual freeze drying time varies.
Material type, moisture content, tray loading, preparation, ambient temperature, and operating settings can all affect cycle duration.
Harvest Right provides a useful example in its owner's manual: a batch requiring approximately 24 hours at 75°F could require more than 40 hours in hotter operating conditions.
For this reason, 24 hours should not be treated as a guaranteed cycle time.
Designed for Controlled Indoor Environments
The Pharma Freeze Dryer is intended for indoor installation.
Harvest Right recommends operating between approximately 35°F and 90°F, with 45°F to 75°F providing the most efficient range.
Warmer room temperatures make it more difficult for the refrigeration system to achieve the extreme cold required for freeze drying, increasing batch times.
The machine should not be operated when ambient temperature exceeds 105°F. Harvest Right states that doing so will void warranty coverage.
Stainless Steel Construction
The Medium Pharmaceutical Freeze Dryer uses stainless steel construction suited to repeated pharmaceutical and botanical processing.
For production environments where equipment must be cleaned regularly, stainless steel provides a durable and practical exterior while the removable stainless steel trays simplify batch handling.
The vacuum chamber, shelving system, door, gasket, and surrounding surfaces should be kept clean to maintain reliable operation and vacuum performance.
Deep Vacuum Processing
Vacuum performance is central to the freeze drying process.
The external vacuum pump connects to the freeze dryer through the supplied vacuum hose. The system also relies on the door gasket, door latch, drain valve, and hose connections to create and maintain a sealed environment.
Before operation, users should confirm that the vacuum pump is connected, the vacuum pump is switched on, the drain valve is completely closed, the vacuum hose is securely connected, the door is properly latched, and the gasket and acrylic door are clean.
Harvest Right identifies these areas as primary checks when the freeze dryer cannot achieve adequate vacuum.
Proper Door Sealing Matters
The acrylic chamber door compresses against a rubber gasket to create the vacuum seal.
Harvest Right uses a two stage door latch. The first stage latches the door, while the second compresses the door against the rubber gasket.
Once the vacuum pump activates, operators should visually confirm that the door has fully sealed against the gasket.
Proper sealing is important because even a relatively small leak can interfere with the machine's ability to reach the required vacuum.
Premier Vacuum Pump Included
The standard Medium Pharmaceutical configuration includes Harvest Right's Premier Oil Vacuum Pump.
The vacuum pump connects directly to the freeze dryer, and its power cord plugs into the receptacle on the rear of the machine.
Harvest Right instructs operators to leave the pump's power switch in the ON position. The freeze dryer then supplies power to the pump automatically when required during the freeze drying process.
Premier Pump Maintenance
The Premier Vacuum Pump uses oil and therefore requires routine maintenance.
Operators should monitor both the oil level and oil condition through the pump's sight glass.
Harvest Right's vacuum troubleshooting checklist states that pump oil should be filled to the middle of the sight glass and replaced when it becomes dirty or cloudy.
For operators comfortable with periodic maintenance, the Premier pump provides the lowest initial purchase price.
Optional Oil Free Vacuum Pump
The Oil Free Vacuum Pump is available as an upgraded configuration.
Because the oil free pump does not require vacuum pump oil or an oil filter, it eliminates those routine maintenance tasks.
The owner's manual confirms that vacuum pump oil and the oil filter are supplied with oil pump configurations but are not included with the oil free pump.
This makes the Oil Free Pump particularly attractive for high frequency processing, repeated production batches, shared equipment, facilities seeking lower routine maintenance, and operators who prefer not to handle vacuum pump oil.
Premier Pump or Oil Free?
The decision primarily comes down to initial investment versus ongoing maintenance convenience.
Choose the Premier Pump if: you want the lowest initial system cost, you are comfortable maintaining vacuum pump oil, you expect moderate batch frequency, or routine pump maintenance is not a concern.
Choose the Oil Free Pump if: you expect frequent production, you want to eliminate oil changes, you want fewer routine pump maintenance tasks, or you value convenience enough to justify the additional upfront cost.
For many smaller and moderate production environments, the included Premier pump offers excellent value. For operations running batches frequently, the Oil Free Pump can simplify day to day production.
