Recommended for approximately a 3.5' x 3.5' vegetative footprint and 3' x 3' flowering footprint, the PhytoMAX 4 8S is an excellent fit for medium grow tents, dedicated indoor gardens, dense plant canopies, and supplemental lighting applications where both intensity and spectrum quality matter. The fixture combines 500 watts of power with Black Dog LED's proprietary Phyto Genesis Spectrum, using eight different LED colors across ultraviolet, visible, and infrared wavelengths.

Rather than optimizing the fixture around a narrow photons per watt calculation, Black Dog LED designed the PhytoMAX platform around plant response. The spectrum extends beyond conventional PAR and is intended to influence both photosynthesis and photomorphogenesis, supporting compact structure, productive canopy development, and strong performance throughout the complete growth cycle. Black Dog specifically uses eight LED colors instead of relying only on white and red diodes.

1,062 µmol/s PBAR Output

At full power, the PhytoMAX 4 8S produces approximately 1,062 µmol/s across the 280 to 800nm PBAR range.

The output is divided into:

  • UV (280–400nm): 31 µmol/s
  • PAR (400–700nm): 952 µmol/s
  • IR (700–800nm): 79 µmol/s

This means the fixture is not limited to conventional PAR measurements. It delivers meaningful photon output below 400nm and above 700nm as part of the same integrated spectrum.

Phyto Genesis 8 Color Spectrum

The core of the PhytoMAX 4 8S is Black Dog LED's proprietary Phyto Genesis Spectrum.

Instead of building the fixture around broad white light alone, Black Dog combines eight LED colors selected to target different plant responses. These wavelengths span ultraviolet, violet, blue, green, yellow, red, and infrared portions of the spectrum.

The goal is to create a more complete lighting environment that influences not only photosynthesis but also plant morphology, canopy development, pigmentation, and other light driven responses throughout the growth cycle.

Integrated Ultraviolet

Approximately 3% of the spectrum is ultraviolet light below 400nm.

Because UV is built directly into the fixture, it is distributed across the growing area alongside the rest of the spectrum rather than being introduced through separate supplemental bars.

Black Dog LED specifically designed this ultraviolet component to encourage compact growth and natural defensive responses while supporting pigmentation and other desirable plant characteristics.

Violet Light for Canopy Penetration

The Phyto Genesis Spectrum also incorporates violet wavelengths between approximately 400 and 450nm.

Black Dog LED uses two different violet wavelengths in the spectrum. These wavelengths are intended to penetrate deeper into dense plant canopies and provide useful light to lower foliage and developing growth that may receive less direct exposure from conventional fixtures.

Blue Light for Compact Plant Development

Blue wavelengths between approximately 450 and 480nm play an important role in chlorophyll B photosynthesis and plant morphology.

Black Dog LED uses this portion of the spectrum to help maintain tighter, more compact growth rather than excessive vertical stretching. A more controlled plant structure can make canopy management easier while improving how efficiently the available growing area is used.

Green and Yellow for Balanced Visibility

Green and yellow wavelengths between approximately 480 and 600nm are supplied through broad spectrum white LEDs.

These wavelengths contribute to photosynthesis while also creating more natural plant visibility for inspection. This is particularly useful when checking leaf color, identifying nutrient issues, inspecting plant health, or simply working beneath the fixture without the distorted appearance associated with older purple style LED systems.

Dual Red Peaks

Red wavelengths between approximately 600 and 700nm provide a major portion of photosynthetically active light.

Black Dog LED uses two different red peaks within the Phyto Genesis Spectrum rather than concentrating output around a single red wavelength.

Balancing these red wavelengths against adequate blue light is also important because excessive red without sufficient blue can contribute to unwanted stem elongation.

Integrated Infrared and Far Red

The PhytoMAX 4 8S extends beyond conventional PAR into the 700 to 800nm infrared range, producing approximately 79 µmol/s of IR output.

Far red wavelengths can work together with shorter wavelength red light to influence photosynthetic efficiency and plant development. Black Dog incorporates these wavelengths into the complete spectral balance rather than relying on a separate far red accessory.

3.5' x 3.5' Vegetative Coverage

For vegetative growth, the PhytoMAX 4 8S is suitable for an approximately 3.5' x 3.5' footprint.

This gives the fixture enough area to support developing plants before flowering while still providing substantially more intensity than smaller PhytoMAX models.

3' x 3' Flowering Coverage

For higher intensity flowering applications, the recommended footprint is approximately 3' x 3'.

Concentrating the fixture's 500 watts and roughly 1,062 µmol/s of PBAR output over this area provides substantially greater canopy intensity for mature plants.

Fully Dimmable From 15% to 100%

The PhytoMAX 4 8S supports industry standard 0 to 10V dimming from approximately 15% to 100% output.

This gives growers the flexibility to use a single fixture through multiple growth stages.

Lower output can be used for younger plants, propagation, or acclimation, while intensity can gradually increase as plants mature. Full output can then be used when maximum canopy intensity is required.

Active Cooling for Maximum LED Performance

Unlike many modern fixtures that rely exclusively on passive heat sinks, Black Dog LED uses active cooling in the PhytoMAX 4 series.

Keeping LEDs cooler helps maintain electrical efficiency and can extend diode life, which is especially important for specialized UV and violet LEDs.

The fixture uses multiple redundant cooling fans, meaning the design is not dependent on one single fan for continued operation. Black Dog rates expected fan life at more than 70,000 hours.

Compact 15 Inch Square Housing

One of the most distinctive aspects of the 8S is how much output Black Dog packs into a small physical fixture.

The unit measures only 15" x 15" x 4.5" and weighs approximately 26 lbs.

That compact design makes it much easier to position than many large bar style LED fixtures while still delivering 500 watts of power.

SP and SC Models

The PhytoMAX 4 8S is offered in two primary versions.

PhytoMAX 4 8SC — The SC model expands voltage compatibility to approximately 100 to 277V and uses a locking, water tight power connection. That makes the SC model more suitable for greenhouses, higher humidity environments, or professional facilities where a more secure electrical connection is preferred.

Power Cord Selection
